SYNOPSIS: TESSA’s Summer Law Internship aims to provide a law student with the valuable opportunity to work alongside organization’s attorneys on all aspects of victim rights litigation, advocacy, community education and response efforts related to sexual violence in the military and in schools. The primary objectives of our internship program are (i) for the law student to learn about legal services tailored for victims and survivors of domestic abuse and gender based violence, (ii) for the law student to develop victim advocacy and community outreach skills and (iii) for the law student to develop networking opportunities in the El Paso County legal community for possible future employment. As a law student intern you will be engaged in TESSA’s legal department practice, which covers civil litigation, victim advocacy, community education and strategic partnership building.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Law Intern will assist with legal research and writing, client consultations, community response meetings and workshops, and other projects to support the legal team as assigned. A successful applicant must have completed at least one (1) year of law school and be in strong academic standing before the internship commences. Applicant must have excellent research, writing and communication skills. Must be capable and competent in working with diverse populations and individuals who are in high-stress, traumatic situations relating to domestic abuse and/or sexual violence.
The Summer Law Internship requires a 10 week full time (40 hour) commitment starting June 1, 2020 and ending July 24, 2020. Must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for internship. Although the internship is unpaid, intern may obtain academic credit with the permission of their law schools. The Colorado Springs Municipal Court is seeking individuals interested in serving as court appointed attorney for qualifying defendants. The vacancy will be created by the retirement of the Honorable Larry E. Schwartz. The vacancy will occur on May 2, 2020.
To be eligible, the applicant must be a qualified elector of the Fourth Judicial District at the time of investiture and must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years. The current annual salary for this position is $173,248. The initial term of office of a district judge is a provisional term of two years; thereafter, the incumbent district judge, if approved by the voters, has a term of six years.
