    SYNOPSIS: TESSA’s Summer Law Internship aims to provide a law student with the valuable opportunity to work alongside organization’s attorneys on all aspects of victim rights litigation, advocacy, community education and response efforts related to sexual violence in the military and in schools. The primary objectives of our internship program are (i) for the law student to learn about legal services tailored for victims and survivors of domestic abuse and gender based violence, (ii) for the law student to develop victim advocacy and community outreach skills and (iii) for the law student to develop networking opportunities in the El Paso County legal community for possible future employment. As a law student intern you will be engaged in TESSA’s legal department practice, which covers civil litigation, victim advocacy, community education and strategic partnership building.

    RESPONSIBILITIES: Law Intern will assist with legal research and writing, client consultations, community response meetings and workshops, and other projects to support the legal team as assigned. A successful applicant must have completed at least one (1) year of law school and be in strong academic standing before the internship commences. Applicant must have excellent research, writing and communication skills. Must be capable and competent in working with diverse populations and individuals who are in high-stress, traumatic situations relating to domestic abuse and/or sexual violence.

    The Summer Law Internship requires a 10 week full time (40 hour) commitment starting June 1, 2020 and ending July 24, 2020. Must successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for internship. Although the internship is unpaid, intern may obtain academic credit with the permission of their law schools. Interested applicants are also encouraged to seek out available public interest fellowships or grants to financially support the internship.

    The Colorado Springs Municipal Court is seeking individuals interested in serving as court appointed attorney for qualifying defendants.  This attorney will be contracted with the City of Colorado Springs and paid at a rate of $175 per case with a minimum of 25 cases per month.  Applications will be screened by a committee established by the Presiding Judge.  The committee will make a recommendation to the entire bench.

    The Fourth Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet Feb. 14, 2020, at the El Paso County Courthouse (270 S. Tejon, Colorado Springs, CO 80901) to interview and select nominees for appointment by the governor to the office of district judge for the Fourth Judicial District (El Paso and Teller counties). The vacancy will be created by the retirement of the Honorable Larry E. Schwartz. The vacancy will occur on May 2, 2020.

    To be eligible, the applicant must be a qualified elector of the Fourth Judicial District at the time of investiture and must have been admitted to the practice of law in Colorado for five years. The current annual salary for this position is $173,248. The initial term of office of a district judge is a provisional term of two years; thereafter, the incumbent district judge, if approved by the voters, has a term of six years.

    Description

    The City of Manitou Springs is looking for legal assistance to serve as the city Prosecutor. This is a contracted position and serves approximately 10 hours a month for the city.

    The City Prosecutor provides the city with legal services in a comprehensive and timely manner. The City Prosecutor works with the Municipal Court Judge and other court officials to best serve the interests of the community.

    Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Process, analyze, and present all information pertaining cases to the Municipal Court
    • Interview witnesses or victims, evaluate police reports, and perform legal research to plan the prosecution of each case as needed.
    • Provide coordination with additional attorneys, the police, Municipal Judge, court clerk, and other professionals if needed.
    • Understand communities’ needs and the motivations to serve community interests, and economy of court resources, ensure best practices on advice and proceedings for defendants and city court officials.
