The Attorney / Senior Attorney will provide legal services in the Litigation / Employment Division of the City Attorney’s Office for the City and its enterprises, as defined by the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, Colorado Constitution Art. X, § 20 and City Charter § 7-90.
Salary Range (Attorney)
$89,637.61 - $151,898.56 Annually
Salary Range (Senior Attorney)
$126,531.50 to $151,898.56 Annually
Reporting Relationship
This position will be part of the Colorado Springs City Attorney’s Office (Litigation/Employment Division). All attorneys for the City are hired by the City Attorney and are part of the City Attorney's Office. All attorneys are exempt and at-will to the City Attorney. This position will report directly to the Litigation/Employment Division Chief, who is generally responsible for all civil litigation and employment law matters, and who in turn, reports directly to the Deputy City Attorney.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies
In this position, you will be responsible for providing legal services in the Litigation/Employment Division of the City Attorney’s Office on behalf of the City, which owns Colorado Springs Utilities, Colorado Springs Airport, Memorial Health System, and several other enterprises. You will assist on related legal matters for other divisions of the City Attorney’s Office when requested and will litigate a variety of civil, administrative, tort and contract cases, as well as federal court cases, from inception through trial and appeal. Duties may also include providing formal and informal legal advice to City staff, responding to requests for public records, communicating with the public, and other tasks as assigned.
This position requires knowledge of substantive law and the ability to handle e-discovery matters for state and federal court; use an electronic case management system; analyze, interpret, and apply legal principles, facts, evidence, and legal precedent in both federal and state court; handle, commensurate with experience, simple and complex litigation effectively through the trial and subsequent appeal in appellate courts of the state and federal court systems. Computer proficiency; superior oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on oral and written advocacy; superior research, interpersonal, and collaboration skills; and the ability to work as a successful member of a team of attorneys representing the City in all its functions are also required.Successful candidates will have:
Attorney
- Four years of general civil and/or criminal trial/litigation experience as described in “Required Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies”
Senior Attorney
- Seven years of general civil and/or criminal trial/litigation experience as described in “Required Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies”
In addition to the above, the successful candidate will also have:
- A Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Law from an ABA (American Bar Association) accredited law school
- Admission to the Colorado Bar as an attorney in good standing
- Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver’s license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Ideal candidates will also have
- Experience representing local governments in civil actions in state and federal court
- Appellate and trial experience in state and federal court
- Significant motions practice experience
- Experience with construction litigation
