April Bar Luncheon: Sexual Harassment Panel

Our panel of experts will discuss gender discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace, including the psychological toll of such, as well as accountability issues in an employment law context.

Moderator: Nathan Whitney, Member in Sherman & Howard's Litigation, Trials and Appeals Group and Chair of the EPCBA Employment Law Section

Speakers:

Professor Tomi-Ann Roberts, professor of psychology at Colorado College. She earned her BA from Smith College and her PhD from Stanford University. Her research focuses on the psychological consequences of the sexualization and objectification of girls and women. The first paper she co-authored on this topic, Objectification Theory, is the most cited article in the 40-year history of the journal Psychology of Women Quarterly. In addition to her scholarly publications, she served on the American Psychological Association's Task Force on the Sexualization of Girls, and is currently the President of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. Recently, she has been covered in many media sources regarding her experience as a 20 year old college student and aspiring actress, being sexually harassed by Harvey Weinstein. This, and other experiences of being diminished by the cultural attitude that women’s sexualized bodies are the most important thing about them, continue to motivate her empirical research, applied consulting work, and advocacy efforts to promote girls’ and women’s right to their own bodies, and to their seen and heard contributions to the world as fully fledged human beings.
